What is London Heathrow Airport?

London Heathrow Airport is the main international airport of England and is located in West London. In year 1929 on the land of Southeast of the hamlet of Heathrow this Airport was started as a small airfield, later in year 1944,the development of this Airport started as a very Big airfield mainly for long-distance military aircraft operation bound for the far east. By the end of World War II the development of this airport was completed and government continued with its development as a civil airport. Earlier it was known as London Airport and later as Heathrow Airport and this name originates from local hamlet called ‘Heath Row’ and this name is famous across the world now.

Number of passengers handled by this airport is more than any other international airport around the world, so making this airport as one of the busiest airport in United Kingdom. It is the third busiest airport in terms of traffic movements and the busiest airport in Europe in terms of passenger traffic. London Heathrow Airport being the busiest airport in United Kingdom provides 76,600 jobs directly and approx. 116,000 indirectly. With the increasing number of commercial and business service providers around this airport makes it the modern aerotropolis.

More than 90 airlines flying to 170 destinations globally operate from London Heathrow airport. The number of Terminals on this airport is four and in addition to these four terminals there is one cargo Terminal. Construction of Terminal 2 complex is going on . Queen Elizabeth Ii officially dedicated terminal five on 14 March 2008 and was opened to passengers on 27 March 2008.
In 1950, the runways at London Heathrow Airport were arranged in pairs at different angles in the shape of hexagram. With the passage of time the length of Runways has grown, it has now two parallel runways running east and west. Aviation security, unit of metropolitan police is responsible for security of Airport. At the time of high security army, including armored vehicles of the Household cavalry is also occasionally deployed at the airport. Full body scanners are used to scan the passengers.

Terminal one was formally inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in year 1968, whereas Terminal two is still under construction, Terminal three was opened on 13 November 1961 for the departure of long route flights. Terminal four was opened in 1986 and this terminal is connected to rest of the terminals through Heathrow cargo Tunnel. Terminal five was opened for operations by Queen Elizabeth II on 27 March 2008.
