It is subscribed to over 1.8 million gas customers and 2.2 million people.
JCP and L (JCPL) is one of the first electric utility companies to start operation in New Jersey. It was the subsidiary of GPU before owned by FirstEnergy. JCPL dates back to 1906, when GPU was formed as Associated Gas and Electric Company or Ageco. Ageco was composed of 12 gas and electric utilities spanning New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. It was renamed to General Public Utilities Corporation in 1946. Its business flourished after the World War II. Its main subsidiaries were Jersey Central Power and Light, Metropolitan Edison Company, Pennsylvania Electric Company, Manila Electric Company and New Jersey Power and Light. By 1946, the company has earned $23 million of revenue. GPU ventured into the Nuclear power field through its subsidiary, Jersey Central Power & Light Company in 1963. JCPL was the major division of the GPU and earned half of the Revenue of GPU. It provided its services to over 40 percent households in New Jersey.
In 2001, GPU was acquired by FirstEnergy Corporation along with its subsidiaries.
