Duke Energy has the generating capacity of 57,500 megawatts in its serving areas. In Latin America, the company generates over 4,300 MW of electricity. Its energy generating resources are coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear energy and serves by 250,200 miles long distribution lines.

Duke Energy dates back to 1900 when it was existing as Catawba Power Company. Founded by Dr Walker Gill Wylie, J B Duke and William States Lee, the company had its first power plant in South Carolina. It was made subsidiary of Wateree Power Comapny in 1917 which in turn was renamed as Duke Power in 1924. After acquiring Nantahala Power and Light Co., in 1988, Duke Power was merged with PanEnergy in1997. It was renamed as Duke Energy. Afterwards, the company was expanded to the several areas of the nations through many acquisitions of of he power utilities. It was combined with Progress Energy Inc in 2012.
