History and Operations:
It was founded in the year 1874, by George Staniford and Benet A. Dewes. It was first printed at 468 Ninth St. as a 4-page, 3-column newspaper, 6 by 10 inches, and its copies were initially distributed free of cost. It serves Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond and the surrounding areas. It was initially managed only by the advertising patronage. William E. Dargie acquired the paper in 1876. It developed remarkably then and was officially named as the “Oakland Tribune” in the year 1891. It started its Sunday edition in the year 1906 and became a full seven day newspaper since then. After the major earthquake in San Francisco in 1906, it emerged as an official San Francisco newspaper. In the year 1992, it was bought by BANG (formerly known as the Alameda Newspaper Group). Initially headquartered at the Tribune Tower until 2007, then it moved its base to San Jose, California, USA. It shares its banner with its "sister" publications which includes- Hayward Daily Review, The Argus, Alameda Times-Star, Tri-Valley Herald, San Mateo County Times, and the Marin Independent Journal.
