Mediacom was founded in 1995 by Rocco B. Commisso in New York. The company was backed by Waller Capital Corporation, Media Finance Group, First Unioun Bank etc. in its infancy. It completed the acquisition cable systems located in California and Kern Valley which provided it the base of over 17,000 subscribers, which would be increased upto 60,000 by 1997. It took over Jones Intercable in 1998 which increased 17,200 extra subscribers account to its. Later on, the company acquisition list covered a division of Cable Systems Corporation, Zylstra Communications, Triax midwest Associates by 1999. Meanwhile, Mediacom started trading on NASDAQ and rebranded itself as Mediacom Communications Corporation.
By 2000, it has earned the total market value of over $1.6 billion. In post 2000, It went on to acquire the several other companies like Rapid Communications Partners, MidAmerican Cable Systems, Tri Cable, Spirit Lake Cable TV, Satellite Cable Services etc. In 2001, Mediacom added digital cable services in its line up that included Cable TV channels, sports channels, Video on demand and Internet access.
